"Just Like Oma" is more than a name. It’s a family legacy built on faith, food, and a shared desire to stay connected to our roots.
What began as a small recipe blog over a decade ago has grown into a family-run network of websites, products, and engaged digital communities.
At the core is an ethos centered around preserving and sharing German culture in a way that feels authentic, accessible, and a little nostalgic.
We help families reconnect with their German roots through recipes, travel, cultural traditions, and everyday resources. Whether you're exploring your heritage, planning a trip to Germany, or passing down stories to your children, our work is here to support you.
Underpinning these sites is our thriving faith-based ministry, Gottes Wort, which now reaches tens of thousands of German-speaking believers worldwide.
That connection opened doors to expand into other languages with A Palavra de Deus in Portuguese and God’s Word for Today in English.
Profits from our work help support these ongoing mission efforts.
We’re the Fulson family, a multi-generational team based in Canada and the UK.
At the heart of it all is Gerhild Fulson, our German-born matriarch, cookbook author, and the original “Oma” behind it all. What started as her way to pass down traditional recipes became something much bigger.
The Fulson Team (L-R): Eran, Mike, Sylvie, Oma Gerhild, Lydia, AndrewGerman-born, Canadian-raised, cookbook author, food critic, and proud Oma. Gerhild is passionate about sharing traditional, authentic German recipes in English so you can enjoy real German home cooking, just like Mutti used to make.
Lydia brings a youthful touch to our traditional recipes. She tests dishes, styles food, takes photos, and helps with writing and social media. Her love for our German heritage and her fresh ideas help us reach the next generation of home cooks.
Eran is Gerhild's son. He runs the content direction, handles how search engines find our websites, writes the Heimweh Letters newsletter, and looks after the shop. He co-founded Tour My Germany with Gerhild, and rebuilt it for travelers with German roots. German at Heart is his project for second-generation readers to pass down their heritage, one tradition at a time.
Sylvie is the heart behind our growing collection of vegan German recipes. From plant-based kartoffelsuppe to creamy pilzcremesuppe, she creates delicious alternatives that remain true to German flavor. She’s also our trusted book editor and a key writer on the site.
Mike is the one who makes sure everything on the site works the way it should. From behind-the-scenes tech and design to updates and security, he’s our go-to problem solver. But he’s also incredibly creative. He handles all the layout and design work for Oma's cookbooks, helps write and shape content, and even contributes to product design for our shop. He’s the perfect mix of technical know-how and artistic flair.
Andrew is Oma Gerhild's oldest son, and helps keep Just Like Oma growing, current, and connected across the web. His work includes managing social media, maintaining and improving recipe pages, creating new website content, among other things in his evolving role. With a background in IT, he brings a practical, problem-solving approach to the team while helping more people discover Oma’s recipes, stories, and German heritage.
We exist to help people rediscover their German heritage and pass down the traditions, foods, stories, and values that might otherwise fade with time. Whether that’s through a recipe, a travel guide, or a DIY Oktoberfest party guide, we want to make cultural connection easy, meaningful, and even fun.
"Just Like Oma" isn't just about food. It's about legacy. It’s about holding onto the smells, sounds, and memories that shape who we are. Whether it's through a Christmas recipe, a family road trip, or a bedtime lullaby in two languages, we believe these small moments matter.
If you're here to rediscover your roots or share them with the next generation, you're in the right place.
