Welcome to Just Like Oma, my little corner of the internet where I, along with my family, get to share not just recipes, but a whole way of life ... German traditions, family stories, and all the little things that make this culture feel like home.
You might already know me from my recipe site, Quick German Recipes, where I share over 600 recipes that taste just like the ones Mutti (my mother) used to make, but faster and easier.
That site has been such a joy to create because, truth be told, I didn’t start out wanting to be a “recipe blogger.” I simply needed to figure out a way to make the meals I loved … but simpler, so I could actually manage them in my own often busy life!
When I first began experimenting with quicker versions of classic German recipes, it was out of necessity. Life was busy ... but food (good, home-cooked food!) has always been how I stay connected to family and cherished memories. Finding ways to make those same comforting meals faster honestly made life better for me.
Later, the idea came to turn those recipes into a website, Quick German Recipes, to help support the German Christian ministry my husband and I had started. What started as a simple way to share recipes (and help fund the ministry) grew far beyond what I ever imagined.
And it wasn’t just me anymore ... our family joined in! My granddaughter Lydia and my daughter-in-law Sylvie began adding their own recipes, giving the site a lovely mix of old favorites and new twists.
As Quick German Recipes grew, so did our family of websites. My son Eran stepped in to help me create Tour My Germany, where he now shares everything from travel tips to heritage stories ... and he’s also started German at Heart, where he explores the culture, traditions, and stories that connect us to our roots.
And then there’s Mike, who quietly works behind the scenes. He writes some of the articles you’ll find on our sites, but his real gift is in making everything look beautiful and work smoothly. He manages all the coding and design that keep these sites running ... something I could never do on my own!
Just Like Oma is my way of pulling everything together ... all the recipes, stories, traditions, and even travel inspiration ... into one place. It’s not just about cooking (though food is at the heart of so many memories). It’s about celebrating everything that makes German life and culture special, and sharing it with you in a way that feels warm, personal, and doable ... just like an Oma would do it for her own family.
I hope that as you explore, you’ll feel inspired to cook a favorite recipe, try a new tradition, or simply reconnect with your own German heritage. Whether you’re here for stories, savings, or sauerkraut, I’m so happy you’re part of this journey.
So welcome ... make yourself at home here. Browse the recipes, read the stories, maybe even laugh along with some of the quirky German habits we love to share. And most of all, enjoy this space where food, family, and faith come together.
After all, that’s what being “just like Oma” is really about ... sharing love, one simple recipe or story at a time.
Tschüss!
